The Crypt

The crypt

The discovery of the remains of the eleventh century Romanesque crypt shortly after the beginning of reconstruction of Notre Dame in 1827 has motivated the development of this vast crypt. The crypt is 128 metres long in total, and is believed to be the longest in France.

This vast underground maze is overgrown by painted scenes and disparate vestiges. It is a charming and paradoxical place. Behind this maze, the logic of the scheduled plan of the basilica overlooking the crypt is gradually perceived.

The atmosphere, the darkness, the faded or damaged decorations are especially favourable to a ‘sensitive’ perception of the place.
